Spring into Summer Nature changes slowly, then all at once.  What had been a ponderous spring is now a racing heart of a new season.

Bare root material has been planted in pots, the ground or in the berm.   Trees and early season shrubs are flowering. spring ephemerals are active in the woods, and hand-seeded plants are well into adolescence.

Gardeners of every stripe and predilection are prowling for plants promising abundance.

The season has not been unventful.  On April 28th, a vicious late-night wind storm ripped two layers of poly off of Dragonfly’s large tropical tunnel, leaving young plants exposed to the elements.

After a lot of head scratching and some determined searching in back, we decided to strip the old plastic, fortify the hip boards and install a new single sheet of plastic over the 30′ x 96′ tunnel.  A couple of hours later and some serious heart poundings over the chilly forecast, we had new poly in place.

The Bare Root Sale sold @400 trees this year, and a roughly similar amount of shrubs and small fruit stock.  Folks were looking to push forward their yards in big ways.

With the new patio, emphasis on perennials and Bloom Community Cafe throwing open its doors, there is a real feeling of forward momentum.

Come on down and celebrate Mother’s Day and the arrival of seriously warm weather — and get that garden in before its feels like it’s too late.
